Computer Virus Removal Service for Long Island New York:
A computer virus is a self-replicating program containing code that explicitly copies itself and can "infect" and damage other programs by modifying them or their environment such that a call to an infected program implies a call to a (possibly evolved) copy of the virus. The longer you operate with a infected computer, you are essentially increasing the chances of data loss, and possibly corrupting other computers.

New viruses are created every day, so it's vital to understand how your computers can be exposed and what you can do to protect them.

Viruses have become increasingly complex and virus infections involve more system elements than ever before. What is a computer virus? A computer virus is a small piece of programming created to enter computer systems and infect files. Like its counterpart in nature a computer virus infects healthy files in its host computer and then spreads its infection to other healthy computers. Typically a virus will replicate itself and try to infect as many files and systems as it can.

Some viruses are benign and may do no more than cause a message to appear or music to play, while others can be downright malicious, destroying files and even making your system unusable. Even the benign ones can create chaos as badly written code can cause unforeseen damage once on your system.

Computer viruses can be written into just about any type of file, so take care when loading software. There have even been isolated incidents where viruses have spread via licensed, sealed software, though you're generally safe with legally purchased software from a reliable source.

Viruses generally have two phases: infection and attack. When a virus is released it infects available programs and files, then depending on the virus, searches for other victims each time those programs and files are opened. Other viruses wait for a trigger before they become infectious. This could be anything, a date, a time or specific event like the deletion of an employee's payroll record.

The attack phase too often waits on a trigger, so a virus can inhabit your system for days, months, even years before it attacks. Then depending on its instructions, it may slow your computer down, change files names or incapacitate your system.

Viruses are generally spread in two ways. Firstly, from files added to your computer from removable media like floppy disks. Secondly and ever increasingly via email and the Internet. The manner in which a virus spreads and what it does depends on the type of virus

If you think you have a virus you must run ANTIVIRUS Software! Most Spyware, and Adware can be removed in the process. Antivirus Software always should be updated regularly, and scans should be scheduled and ran every night when the computer is left on.

We can help you set up and instruct you how to use either one of these software and teach you how to protect yourself better to future virus threats.

If you think your machine is infected please refrain from emailing anyone, if possible, update your virus definitions from your providers website and scan all drives immediately. If a virus is detected and and can not be removed then you have to consider reformatting your machine.

Antivirus Software always should be updated regularly, and scans should be scheduled to run every night if the computer is left on.

Types of Viruses

Worms
A worm is a self-replicating program that doesn't necessarily infect other programs. Instead it proliferates across networks and the Internet. The Melissa virus, for example replicates itself via Microsoft Outlook® contact lists. Worms work in invisible parts of the system, and it's possible to only become aware of them once they've consumed most of the system's resources.

Trojan Horses
Like its mythological counterpart, a Trojan Horse is a piece of programming that sneaks in under the guise of being useful, entertaining, or merely mysterious, and bides its time until it's ready to reveal its destructive purpose. This breed may destroy files, but it's most common use is to create a back door for intruders to access and control your computer. Trojan Horses do not replicate like viruses and worms.

Boot sector viruses
Boot sector viruses can infect hard drives and removable media like floppy disks. Boot sectors are small areas on a hard drive or disk where information about the drive or disk structure is stored. Whenever the computer boots up or the disk is loaded the virus is loaded into memory.

A boot sector virus can be executed if an infected floppy disk is in the drive when you reboot. Once loaded, this virus can infect any disk placed in the drive, as well as the hard drive itself.

Symptoms of a boot sector virus may be that your computer gives error messages when it boots, or even worse refuses to boot entirely, or if your drive defragmenting utility suddenly reports bad sectors on your disk.

File or program infector viruses
These viruses attach themselves to executable programs. Once the original infected program is run the virus transfers to your computer's memory and may replicate itself further, spreading the infection. These viruses can be spread beyond your system as soon as the infected file or program is passed to another computer.

The simplest of these viruses work by overwriting part of the program they're infecting. These can thankfully be caught early, because the program rarely continues to work as it should.

More sophisticated versions hide their presence by saving the program or file's original instructions so that these are executed even after infection. This type may not be noticed until it is too late and enters the attack phase.

There are also file infector viruses that do not change the infected program or file, but rather the route your computer takes to open that file.

Macro viruses
Macro viruses work by infecting files from programs that run macros, another word for a prescribed sequence of actions. Spreadsheets, for example, have macros that let them conduct calculations, while word-processing programs have macros that let them check spelling and finish words.

Macro viruses can easily spread because they infect files, not programs. People readily exchange files in the course of a day's work. To make it worse, macro viruses are platform-independent and so can easily spread between Microsoft, Macintosh and other operating systems.

Multipartite viruses
These possess the characteristics of both program and boot sector viruses and can start out in a program and then spread to the boot sector, or vice versa.

The update is essential because without the most recent virus definitions, a new viruses can be on your computer, and a scan won't recognize them. That is why your scan can come up with "no virus found", and your computer continues to malfunction.

If you need to update your definitions for your existing Antivirus program, click the link that apply to your system.

2) After your definitions are up to date, then run a disk scan of your entire "c: drive" or hardrive.

3) After a scan is completed, and viruses are detected you may either delete or quarantine the virus so it no longer is a threat to your machine. LIComputerfix recommends that you follow the directions of each software's recommended choice on whether or not to delete the file. Deletetion of system files can literally destroy your computer and then you are forced to rebuild.

4) Finally if your antivirus software is able to remove the virus great, but we recommend you repeat your scanning process a second or third time, until the scan comes up "0" Zero viruses found. It is even a good idea to restart the computer after a "0" Zero viruses found message and then scan your PC one more additional time.

A practical thing to do is schedule a automatic scan to start at 4am while you are asleep and leave the machine on periodically overnight so this process doesn't interfere with your use.

It All Boils Down to the Code
A computer virus is simply a set of computer instructions or computer code that is written by some unscrupulous person. This code is attached to some part of the normal computer operating system or computer program. Instructions in this code tell the computer to perform some task. This task is often a destructive one, such as deleting important information or crashing the hard disk. However, there are other benign viruses that may be only a slight aggravation. Some viruses have been known to do nothing more than put a large happy face on your computer screen.

How Does a Computer Get a Virus?
Just as a human virus is passed from person to person, a computer virus is passed from computer to computer. A virus can be attached to any file that you copy to your computer. If you download files from the Internet or copy programs or files from friends on floppy disks, you are very susceptible to viruses. Actually, anytime that you download files or put a floppy disk into your computer, you are susceptible to viruses.

Many viruses are spread through e-mail. Generally, you cannot get a virus from simply reading e-mail. Certain types of today's viruses, like Klez, are different. They are very dangerous because you do not even have to open an e-mail attachment to release the virus. Just opening the e-mail itself can release the dangerous bug.

Under normal circumstances, a virus becomes active when you execute a program that contains the virus. For instance, if you download a program from the Internet and it is infected with a virus, the virus will attack your computer when you activate the program. Viruses are everywhere. Although it is rare, viruses have even been found in commercial shrink-wrapped software.

How Do I Know If My PC Has a Virus?
The trigger that activates the virus can be almost anything. For instance, the virus can be activated the minute it is installed. On the other hand, it may initiate its dirty work the next time you start your computer. In many cases, a virus resides inside your computer in an inactive state, waiting for a certain event to happen. Like having a physical virus in your body, you can have a virus in your computer system and not even know it. A virus can wait patiently in your system and attack only on a certain date. Of course, in the time between the moment you contracted the virus and the time it made itself known to you, you may have innocently spread the virus to others.

Stop Viruses Before They Attack
A computer virus can do extensive damage. It can crash your hard disk. It can destroy all or some of your data. Many viruses do weird little things that adversely affect your computer. The most usual symptom of a computer virus is erratic behavior. The destruction can happen at any rate of speed and can affect almost any part of the computer. Viruses can spread quickly through today's intricate cyber world. If your computer starts to act a little weird, the first thing to do is to check for a virus.

If you are smart, you will stop viruses before they enter your computer. You can do this by purchasing a good virus protection program. Such a program will check all files for viruses. Once installed, an antivirus program can be set to work in the background. It will check all files before they enter your computer and will alert you if a virus is detected before it contaminates your system. If a virus is detected, your antivirus program will quarantine or eliminate it so that it cannot harm your computer.

Be very careful to purchase a virus protection program that matches your operating system. If you use a Mac, buy a virus protection program made especially for Macintosh computers. If you use Windows 98 or Me or XP, select a program that was written specifically for your operating system. Don't try to use a virus protection program that was written for Windows 95 on a Windows XP machine; this will really mess up your computer.

Keep Virus Protection Software Up-to-date
New viruses are written everyday. It seems that there are many people in the world who have a lot of time on their hands and a slightly warped idea of how to use their intelligence. Luckily, companies like McAfee, Symantec, and Panda Software are constantly scouting for new viruses and updating their antivirus software tools. They use any of a growing arsenal of weapons to detect and fight viruses.

In order to take advantage of these new antivirus shields, you must update your antivirus program on a regular basis. The company that manufactured your antivirus software will provide constant updates as they find new viruses. You should make arrangements to get these updates regularly to be sure that your computer is completely protected. Go to the Web site of your antivirus manufacturer to download new virus updates, or definitions as they are often called. Some newer antivirus programs automatically update your antivirus protection as well as the antivirus definitions when you log onto the Internet through a process called live update or online virus scan.

When you purchase a virus protection program, be sure to check out the company's update program. Some manufacturers give you free updates; others do not. If you already own a virus protection program but have never updated it, see the documentation that came with your program or contact the company that created your program to check on their update policy. If your program did not come with free updates or if you have already used up your free updates, you can purchase additional updates, usually for a nominal fee.

To keep you protected as much as possible, I recommend purchasing antivirus software that updates automatically. If you update your virus protection manually, a weekly update is mandatory; a daily update may be a good idea in today's virus-infested atmosphere.

Viruses and the people who write them are intriguing subjects. For more detailed information on the different types of viruses and how they work, visit the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center or check out the Virus Bulletin. Although the Virus Bulletin is a technical journal, it will give you good solid information and links to virus information and antivirus products.
